[Hong Kong] Egg Tarts at Honolulu Coffee Shop 檀島咖啡餅店

Famous egg tartsat Honolulu Coffee Shop, Hong Kong HK$5.50 each
Egg tarts are famous in Hong Kong so one ought to try out the local delight. This Honolulu Coffee Shop is a stone’s throw away from Wanchai MTR station so it was very easy for us to grab a few on the go. We packed some on our last trip to Hong Kong as they are a great in-between-meals snack while shopping. This time, we were on our way to Wing Wah Noodle Shop so we made it a point to grab some egg tarts for later enjoyment.
Yummy, crispy and fresh. The crust is crispy and flaky while the middle is soft and smooth. According to our guide book (Hong Kong Tram Guide), this coffee shop has a 50-year history and each tray of egg tarts is left overnight in the fridge before baking. Throughout the baking process, the temperature is adjusted 3 times and they are cooled for 2 minutes before serving.

Here’s a closer look at the great warm colours of the egg tarts.

Quite the popular buy, there are always people ordering the egg tarts at the outlet.

Wiffy’s Notes: This is definitely one of my two favourite egg tarts in Hong Kong, the other favourite being that from the famous Tai Cheong bakery. Honolulu has definitely perfected their egg tarts and I love the crust which is so blissfully flakey. I have been buying their egg tarts every time I come to Hong Kong and this is a routine I am more than happy to continue. I love the fact that the egg tart is always warm when sold, so it is extra enjoyable if you eat it on the spot. They keep for 3 days, so sometimes I buy egg tarts on my last day in HK, so that I can enjoy these famous egg tarts for breakfast for the next two days (keeping it in the fridge if stored overnight).
