Hot Tomato (Food Review, Singapore)
Steak, Prawn & Aglio Olio from Hot Tomato Express

I have walked passed Hot Tomato Express countless times whenever I am at Plaza Singapura but it was not too long ago that I tried their set lunch. It all happened on a day when I was really really famished. As we exited the MRT station, this was the first food stall that I saw, with a huge banner outside advertising the set lunch.

The above is the menu and prices for their set lunch and the photo made me even more faint from hunger. I usually shied away from food that sounds too value-for-money, not because I am atas (in fact, I am the self-proclaimed queen of cheap), but because I just knew as a cook that ingredients have a base cost, so most of the time it’s just not possible to enjoy premium ingredients when the price tag is too low. But hunger got over me and I have to eat this.

Ordered the set lunch and added S$1.90 for the soup with garlic bread and drinks. I think this is minestrone soup and it’s quite yummy. So we are off to a good start.

The main course – “Steak, King Prawn & Aglio Olio”. They said they ran out of 1 large king prawn so they asked if they can substitute with 2 smaller prawns. No problem for me.

The steak, as I expected for the price, is not the thick stab as shown in their photo, but nevertheless it was decent for the price. And I’m quite surprised that it is not overcooked at all… it still has pink in the middle. It goes really well with the black pepper sauce. The aglio olio is nice too and not overcooked. So all-in-all, I’m quite happy with the value-for-money set lunch. I’m glad I tried and I will definitely eat this again :D

Hot Tomato is one of my husband and my favourite place whenever we drop by Plaza Sg. Their food are really value for money; like u said it: well cooked perfectly, taste nice, service is tops and portion reasonable (not too miserly yet not too generous).

Actually, i didn’t really enjoy the food over at this sg plaza as much as i had wanted to.

The very first time i had a meal was at Hot Tomato Cafe & Grill in 313.
The food was superb and service was really excellent.

When i had a gathering, i suggested going Hot Tomato and was then told by friend that there’s a branch in plaza sg, so we went ahead and tried it out.

Overall, the food was not as nice as i had before in 313 as the sauce was dripping everywhere the plate. The arrangement wasn’t put properly.

The staff pretended to be busy when we wanted something and took like few waves to get their attentions and the best part was, the staff came over with ‘what you want’ kind of face and attitude.

We were there to have a nice meal gathering. The food was not nice, service was not nice, was totally disappointed.

Yup that was my experience with the one in plaza sg.
And all the staff are from The Philippines.

I tried eating here only once and I ordered the same thing! They cook the steak well and it tastes good, but the amount I agree, is a bit too small but it’s worth the price.

Your post made me ceave to eat there again! I wonder if the owner is Filipino?
