Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles

One of the first thoughts when you arrive at Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles (林東芳牛肉麵) would probably be bewilderment at the run-down, hole-in-the-wall look of the shop front. Don’t let that fool you though, as the culinary treat you will be experiencing inside is nothing short of magical. In fact, this famous eatery has a huge following and you can expect long queues during meal times. It comprises of 3 shop spaces: one for the kitchen with a connecting space for tables, and a separate shop space just down the street with additional tables for customers.

Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles - Interior
A humble setup next to the kitchen with a few tables for customers. Very sparingly and traditionally decorated like old Chinese shop houses.

Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles - Menu
Here is the pricing for the noodles (NT$80 to NT$240), soups (NT$130 to NT$210) and side dishes (NT$30 to NT$130).

appetizer dishes
Some of the side dishes (小菜) that you can choose from and it’s self-service at NT$30 a bowl.

Lin Dong Fang Half Tendon Half Beef Noodles
Half Tendon Half Beef Noodles Soup 半筋半肉麵 NT$180 (small).
Try this if you only have tummy space for 1 bowl and you want the best of both worlds.

tender beef
A look at the beef slice. It is tenderly cooked and melts in your mouth as you savour it.

wiffy: Wow, look at the tendon! Let me take a photo first.
Lady at the shop: <Points out> Oh, that’s a beef slice, not tendon. <Scoops up the other piece (bottom photo) to show us> That’s a tendon.
B: <Looks at wiffy> You noob!

beef tendon
A piece of tendon. The jelly-like and slightly chewy bite is an acquired taste but it’s naturally delicious for me.

Lin Dong Fang Noodles - Super QQ!
The noodles are cooked to perfection. Just the right amount of bite and every mouthful is very satisfying.

Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles
Beef Noodles 牛肉麵 NT$130. The clear broth is very flavourful and I finished every last drop of it.

pig stomach
Sliced Beef Stomach 切牛肚 (Cold Dish) – NT$120

pig stomach
The sliced stomach is springy and chewy and also an acquired taste. When we asked what it was from the menu, the lady in the shop was kind enough to show us a piece from a bowl she just served another customer and happily explained what it was. The fragrant sesame oil is outstanding in this dish.

chilli oil
Chilli Oil 辣椒油
We were recommended to add this to the soup broth is we want it to be hot and spicy. It is best described as “chilli oil butter” – just scoop a little and dissolve it in your bowl according to your taste. It lends an extra kick to the already flavourful broth. If you like it very much, you can buy a bottle home for NT$110.

This chili paste is meant for dipping your side dishes. It’s hotter than the chili oil.

Our bill came to NT$430 (S$18.50)

wiffy: The Taiwanese take their beef noodles seriously, to the extend that they have annual beef noodles festivals to compete for the coveted title of ‘Beef Noodles King’ in Taiwan. If you are searching for the best beef noodles in Taiwan, Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles is a great place to start. It seemed to me as if the the lack of exterior pomposity is done on purpose, for they dive right into what really matters – which is cooking the perfect bowl of beef noodles. Everything from the QQ noodles to the flavourful broth to the tender, melt-in-your-mouth beef cuts is nothing short of perfection. Their warm and humble service made us feel really welcome in their charming little shop. Good food and warm service are all that matters here. I would love to try the shop’s specialty, wheat gluten aka tao pok, if not for the fact that we are really too full. So it is an excuse to return again the next time I’m in Taipei.
