[New Taipei] Nanya Night Market
Nanya night market (南雅夜市), situated along Nanya East Road (南雅東路) is a relatively new night market in Taipei. Located near Fuzhong MRT station, the market has spacious walkways and is easy to explore. It occupies one long stretch of road with food stalls in the middle and shops at the sides. Since Taipei has countless night markets and the more frequently recommended ones are Shilin, Shida and Tamsui, we figured that it would be a great idea to visit some of the lesser known but popular ones. We were delighted with our new find.

Getting to Nanya Night Market
Take exit 1 at Fuzhong MRT station. Walk along Xianmin Blvd, section 1 (縣民大道一段) for about 10 mins. Turn right when you hit the 2nd major cross-junction with Nanya East Road on your right. Continue walking for around 5 mins and you should see the unmistakable stalls that are part of the night market. See walking directions on Google Maps.
Although named as a tourist night market, we found that there were less tourists and more locals here as compared to the famous Shilin night market. There is a supermarket if you are looking for groceries or toiletries, several shops selling fashion accessories and a shop called “eye-mazing” specializing in fake lashes.
A novelty find in Nanya night market is the milk bottle popcorn (奶瓶爆米花), one of its kind in Taipei. From the direction we came, we thought the stall was closed; but in fact there was a long queue in the alley. The stall opens daily from 5pm to 12.30am except on Thursday which is closed.
The milk bottle is huge at only NT$150! The popcorn comes in a bag within the bottle so you don’t have to worry about having to clean it to keep as a souvenir. The popcorn was crunchy and tasted fresh with a buttery texture. Bag-only versions without the bottle are also for sale at NT$80 and NT$100.
A must-try food stall at Nanya night market is its famous sesame chicken (麻油雞). We queued for 15 minutes before getting a seat, during which we watched the chef cook the dish from start to end. Please note that the recommended stall is the one in the middle (see signboard above). There is a modern and spacious shop at the side also selling sesame chicken, right opposite this stall. However, there were only a few customers at the shop, so we determined that this is the famous stall that everyone is raving about.
How to order: For the mee sua, you can choose between soup NT$30 or dry NT$20. For the sesame chicken, you can choose between thigh (雞腿) NT$115 or pieces (雞塊) NT$90. We chose soup mee sua with thigh but we regretted both choices because the chicken pieces will be easier to eat and you can dip your dry mee sua into the chicken soup bowl. We thought the chicken thigh could be more tender, perhaps there wasn’t enough time to simmer it. The mee suah was very springy and QQ, something you can only find in Taiwan. If you ordered the thigh, you will be given plastic gloves. We ate this during winter and heavenly aroma of the sesame oil was really comforting.
We tried a fruits stall located at the start of the night market with clearly marked prices: 1 pack for NT$35, 3 packs for NT$100. The stall owner was very friendly and even let us sample some unfamiliar types of fruits.
