[Taipei] Smoothie House (Yong Kang 15)
Situated in Yong Kang Street (永康街), also known as “foodie street” (美食街), Smoothie House is the place to go for a cool shaved-ice dessert on a hot summer’s day after dining at Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐 or Kao Chi 高記, which is just a 5-minute stroll away from either one.
No. 15 Yong Kang Street. Interestingly, this location used to house another famous shaved-ice store, Ice Monster. It was then taken over by a store simply known as Yong Kang 15, named after the prominent address. With its move, this famous address was most recently taken over by Smoothie House. We were initially confused as we spotted another Smoothie House on our way here from
Tai Fung so we asked the staff at this corner store to clarify. We got a confirmation that presently, both stores are part of the same Smoothie House chain (note: different boss from Ice Monster or Yong Kang 15 – so they are definitely staking their monopoly in the area with this latest outlet). This corner store is an outdoor version with a more limited menu so we decided to visit the larger store that we walked past just a minute ago.
No. 9 Yong Kang Street. This is the outlet we visited, just a few stores away from the famous No. 15 address. It had 2 floors, much more seats and very crowed. Once you placed your order, you will be given a queue number. You can find a seat while waiting for your number to be flashed on the LED display on either floor. We asked for a recommendation on popular items and were told that items 1 and 3 were most popular.

Snowflake Fruits Mix with Panna Cotta 手工奶酪综合水果雪花冰 NT$160. This is item 1 from the menu, a refreshing bowl of shaved ice lined with fresh fruits such as strawberries, kiwis and mangoes, topped with panna cotta.
Mango Snowflake Ice with Ice Cream 雪酪芒果雪花冰 NT$150. This is item 3 from the menu. Mango lovers will be delighted at the generous helping of fresh mango pieces surrounding the shaved ice, topped with a scoop of mango-flavour ice cream.

Getting there: For now, the nearest MRT Station is either Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Station or Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station but either one is too far to walk from so it is highly recommended to take a cab. Lookout for Dongmen Station Exit 5, opening in Sept 2012, which will only be a 10-min walk away.

wiffy: If you are in the famous Yong Kang Street aka Foodie Street (Din Tai Fung, Kao Chi, Lao Zhang & Yong Kang Beef Noodles are in the area), save some tummy space for desserts at Smoothie House. Taiwanese shaved ice has an ultra-fine texture (hence the name ‘snowflake ice’) and they are generous with the fresh fruits topping. It makes a sweet ending to any meal :)
